Bexar County
D.A.R.E. Program
D.A.R.E. Mission Statement
Dear fellow
Citizens,
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)
program remains a vitally important program to the youth of San Antonio and
Bexar
County. Preparing our children to make better
informed decisions and to lead happy and healthy lives tomorrow must become our
focus today. It is an investment in our own "FUTURE", since these children will
become the citizens, neighbors, parents, civic leaders, employees, business
leaders and owners of tomorrow.
Bexar County
D.A.R.E.
Program has come a long way since its inception in January 1993. The
D.A.R.E.
Program presented a new 10-week middle school
and new 9-week elementary school scientific and research based curriculums
during 2003-2004 school year. Two new supplemental lessons have been added one
for Bullying and one for Gangs. In addition
D.A.R.E.
provides mini lessons to kindergarten through 4th grade students and a new
Parenting Program. The Bexar
County
D.A.R.E. Program has expanded to reach 115
elementary schools 26 middle/junior high schools in 14 out of 15 school
districts. D.A.R.E.
has reached or impacted over
675,000 (plus) students from 1993 to 2007.
The new D.A.R.E.
High School
curriculum is scheduled to be released by end of 2007.
D.A.R.E.
has consistently changed over the years to
employ state-of-the-art scientific and researched curriculums. I can assure the
citizens of Bexar
County
D.A.R.E.
Works!
Your
Bexar County
D.A.R.E.
Program has expanded its role to incorporate cross-training our
D.A.R.E.
Officer-instructors
as School Resource Officers (SRO’s) and Safety Officers. This is part of the
Sheriff’s Office
initiative for “Home Land Security” and the protection of
our schools and our children. We have joined with over 12 other local
Bexar
County law enforcement agencies to include our
Ft. Sam Houston military and DOD police, forming “Project
Partnership” allowing us to reach more children and add more schools
under one D.A.R.E.
banner – one unified San Antonio/Bexar
County
D.A.R.E.
Program.
All of the current evaluations of the “New
D.A.R.E.”
curriculums clearly indicated what we have known in
Bexar
County for years –
D.A.R.E. does and is working for our
children. I am clearly convinced, based on the over-whelming positive feedback
from the school administrators, teachers, parents and students; and on the new
and recurring demands calling for the expansion of our program, that our
D.A.R.E.
program is working in Bexar County.
It is the “Right Thing To Do” for the health and safety of our children.
Our citizens should be proud as our
Bexar
County
D.A.R.E. Program is considered by
D.A.R.E.
America to be one of
the model Community-based, Community- supported and Community funded programs in
the world. In partnership with D.A.R.E.
America we have
introduced numerous fundraisers to help reduce cost and to continue expanding
our local program. D.A.R.E.
is far more than just street-smart law enforcement officers in a classroom it is
a “Commitment To Excellence” for our citizens and Communities. These men and
women (Your D.A.R.E.
Officers) are committed and passionate about teaching kids the harmful effects
of tobacco, alcohol, inhalants, illegal drug and over-the-counter or
prescription drug abuse. They are preparing them to deal with peer pressure, be
responsible, accountable and respectful, how to handle situations without use of
violence (anger management), and teaching them invaluable life and resistance
skills as well as, teaching them how to make healthy and safe decisions.
I will continue to pursue meeting the needs,
desires, and demands of our citizens as well as taking every precaution to keep
our school kids safe. I believe D.A.R.E.
to be a viable asset in our efforts to reduce juvenile and adult drug related
and violent crimes. We welcome all citizens to join our "Bexar
County
D.A.R.E.
TEAM". Together we will make a difference in our
Community and protect our most precious asset, our children. I encourage
you all to visit your child’s school and see our
D.A.R.E.
Officer-instructors in action.
We sincerely appreciate your contributions and
consistent support.
I Remain:
Dr. Milo Colton
President, Bexar
County D.A.R.E.
