D.A.R.E., Spurs and Kids Sports Network
Summer Drug Free Basketball
League

Tanzania Police Superintendent and four police officers from
Africa visited the
D.A.R.E.
& SPURS & KIDS Sports Network Summer
Drug Free Basketball League co-sponsored by The Montgomery Area
Youth Sports League (Reverend Garlon Barton and Mr. Ollie
Simpson). This league took over 300 kids off the streets and
put them in a positive, safe and drug and violence free
environment. Deputy Corey D. Thompson and Deputy Darrell
Harris (Bexar
County
D.A.R.E. Officer/Instructors) worked with the kids teaching them
importance of making informed, fact based healthy and safe
decisions. Yes, "New
D.A.R.E." outside the classroom. The
Bexar
County Sheriff's
involvement was conceived by Deputy Chief Raymond Trevino -
Patrol Division, in keeping with
Sheriff
Ralph Lopez's "Commitment to Excellence" on the part of the
Sheriff's
Office to our Communities. It is time "to
take-it-to-the-streets" said Deputy Chief Trevino. This is a
classic example of law enforcement working together with the
Community and business leaders to deter crime by offering a
positive environment for our children. Superintendent Charles
O. Mkumbo of the Tanzania Police Department said he was most
impressed with how the
and citizens worked together. He was really impressed with
our
Bexar County
D.A.R.E.
Program and how well Deputy Thompson and Deputy Harris worked so
well and were so respected by the kids participating.
Superintendent said it was clear to him that the
D.A.R.E.
program was highly effective and was making a difference to
and for these kids. Deputy Chief Trevino praised Lt. Alfred
C. Ochoa, Commander Community Initiatives and Sgt. Anthony
E. Davis for their efficient implementation of his plan.
Trevino said that the
would continue to use his
D.A.R.E.
Officer/instructor and "Community Policing" personnel assets
in these types of summer programs. Deputy Chief Trevino and
Sheriff
Lopez - vision is to see a similar league started for the
West, South and North sides of
Bexar County
as well - reaching out to more Communities and to save more
children.
